The winner of this past weekend’s adorable costume contest was a pitbull dressed like an avocado who, only days earlier, had been rescued from a kill shelter. An uplifting story to begin the first “Dogtoberfest” last year at the Bridge and Tunnel Brewery, among the several brewery-taprooms that have begun populating Myrtle Avenue’s side streets.

Other entrants included a very excited erstwhile show dog dressed as Snow White and a small maltipoo who, after rejecting an assortment of more colorful costumes, had settled on military camo. Not in competition was one of the bartenders, who remained in an impressive dog outfit for the entirely of the festivities.

“We’ve been very dog friendly ever since we opened,” one of Bridge and Tunnel’s bartenders tells Bushwick Daily, “So this felt like a very obvious thing to do.”

A percent of bar sales as well as proceeds from a raffle, barbeque and pumpkin carving went to the Queens-based pet rescue organization Bobbi & the Strays.

For further local dog costume fun, Aunt Ginny’s is holding similar festivities this Friday.
