The city has a plan to revamp parts of Maria Hernandez Park.

The NYC Parks Department is currently in the planning phase of a project that will turn the underused asphalt pitch at Maria Hernandez into a synthetic turf field, install misting stations, and update the fitness equipment, Bklyner first reported.

The Parks Department has an operating budget of $3.4 million to be used for tearing up the large blacktop behind the plaza near the back of the park and installing a synthetic pitch that will be marked as a soccer field.

Modern fitness equipment that will serve exercisers of different abilities   will replace the worn pull-up bars currently used for street workouts. Spectator seating and a misting station will also be installed by the synthetic field to cool everybody down on those scorching days of Bushwick summer.

Community Board 4, which serves Bushwick, will review the plans for approval; however, don’t expect to see a renovated Maria Hernandez until at least 2020: this planning phase will probably last until October, Bklyner reports, and the Parks Department says that such construction typically takes 12-18 months.
