Make sure to pick up your black tie best from the dry cleaners, Bushwick. The 9th annual Bushwick Film Festival is right around the corner, and on Thursday, September 29th, the fest kicks off at Wyckoff Avenue’s House of Yes with a star studded red carpet screening of Moritz Rechenberg’s drama “I Am Gangster,” followed by a Q&A with the director himself.

The festival’s kickoff film takes place in Los Angeles and centers on the lives of members of the city’s Latino community who are affected by gang violence.

The film is one of 27 films screening at this year’s four-day festival, including 11 documentaries, 10 narrative films, four short films, a web series screening and a selection of arthouse films.

The festival also strives to provide a platform for auteurs who are under represented in the industry. “Because the industry suffers from a lack of diversity, I wanted to create a unique platform that was conscious of that struggle, where all stories – including immigrant stories, women’s stories, and LGBTQ stories – could be seen and thrive,” explains Bushwick Film Festival founder Kweighbaye Kotee.

Tickets to the fest, including both full passes and tickets to individual screenings, are available here.

Enjoy the show, Bushwick!
