Get a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Some New and Old Neighborhood Landmarks

Open House is an international event showcasing gems of design and architecture by opening up historic sites and providing behind the scenes tours of neighborhood fixtures to the general public. The New York iteration of the festival comes to all five boroughs this weekend. Or, if you want to stay a little closer to home, check out these four options in Bushwick and Ridgewood:

Bushwick’s triumphant return of beer brewing after a 40 year hiatus comes in the form of a beautifully-designed space on Troutman Avenue. Architects and brewers will be on hand to provide behind-the-scenes tours of the space to discuss the challenges of design on both Saturday and Sunday. With only four tours scheduled each day, this event is sure to be packed.

The former printing factory on the corner of Morgan and Metropolitan avenues houses 35 artist studios. This site is open on Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. only.

The LEED Gold studio space of architecture and urban landscape design firm, thread collective, sits inconspicuously on Troutman Avenue between Wilson and Knickerbocker avenues. The building features a green roof, open plan studio space, residential units, and creative use of reclaimed materials like the old Coney Island Boardwalk. Hurry in on Saturday only between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for a rare tour of the space.

Nowadays is the site of some of our favorite summertime activities (including relaxed outdoor drinking and a weekly film series), but what makes the space unique is its 18,000 square feet of park-like atmosphere peppered in with industrial accents. Come for a tour on Saturday at 2, 3, or 4 p.m. to hear architects from Future Green Studio talk about how they took inspiration from the surrounding industrial landscape.
