Amanda Mehl, an artist and fashion designer who founded the Bushwick-based fashion and arts project AMEHL, is staging Carnaval NYC, an outdoor fashion, music and cultural celebration, on Sunday, October 18 at Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick.
The event pairs a fashion show with a street celebration. It will feature an intergenerational cast of more than 70 models alongside live music, DJs, dancers, performers and artists, plus a Carnaval-style procession, all inspired by carnival traditions and cultures from around the world.
Carnaval NYC, in Mehl’s words, “takes the idea of a traditional fashion show and turns it into one big public celebration.” Dance and performance groups are being organized for the day, Mehl said.
The event will be held at Maria Hernandez Park, the public park bounded by Knickerbocker and Irving avenues and Suydam and Starr streets in Bushwick.
AMEHL is the fashion and arts project of Mehl, who has produced themed runway shows in prior seasons, including a back-to-school collection staged inside a school bus and an SS23 collection titled “The Prophecy.” Mehl also created a talk show with her mother, Beverly Mehl.
