It’s no joke: New York City rents have skyrocketed in the past few years, and will continue to climb for the foreseeable future. With new luxury apartments sprouting up at the speed of light, affordable housing has become far and few. It’s no different in Bushwick, as a common story of longtime residents being priced out all too frequently. That’s where the Bushwick Gazette comes in.
Un Derecho A La Vivienda! (A Right To Housing!) will launch this Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1349 Gates Ave and aims to be the end-all for affordable housing information. To give voice to those being pushed out of their homes, urbanists at Parsons The New School have designed a gazette to raise awareness and educate people about the housing crisis in Bushwick. The free gazette contains a history of the neighborhood, interviews with residents and organizers, an analysis of the situation and Mayor de Blasio’s plan, and proposals of alternative housing models.
The gazette, written and designed by graduate students in design and urban ecologies at Parsons, is printed annually in English and Spanish with this being the second edition. The gazette is in collaboration with Bushwick Community members and the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizen Council (RBSCC).
Parsons Urbanists will be in attendance as well as RBSCC staff and residents and other Community members. Get your free copy starting this Saturday.
