When an artist who goes by the name “Napkin Killa” requested to take over Bushwick Daily’s Instagram account, I paused for a moment. As a self-described “NYC caricature assassin who uses bar napkins as his medium” (and who recently collaborated with New York Magazine’s blog, The Cut, to cover Fashion Week), I wasn’t sure it would be the right fit. Would bar napkin art really be right for a Bushwick Daily Insta-Takeover? Yes. The answer is yes.
Napkin Killa proposed that he camp out in a different (sometimes multiple) Bushwick bar each night and use the setting as his inspiration. He explained that he “usually drinks at his local Bushwick bars and draws the characters he sees around him, often unbeknownst to them. When he’s done with a portrait he hides the napkins for others to find, but not before Instagramming his victims first. “We were sold. Throughout his week, Napkin Killa spotted selfie-takers, Tinder-braggers, a Tony, and many more comical characters. Confession: His Boobie Trap illustration is my everything.
I’d say this was a very successful first illustration-based Insta-Takeover!
