To say that Devonte Hynes’ background in the music industry is eclectic wouldn’t be sufficient. In 2004 he formed Test Icicles, a fiery indie, alt rock band, which came to it’s demise in 2006. He then began recording as Lightspeed Champion, and is now making music as Blood Orange. Hynes has produced and co-written songs with many indie-crossover and popular artists like Solange, Sky Ferreira, Theophilus London, The Chemical Brothers, and Florence and the Machine (just to name a few). He has also worked as a fashion consultant for Jay-Z’s clothing company, Roccawear. The singer/songwriter/producer has redefined the laws of pop, r&b, soul and dance fusion and continues to do so in his excellent sophomore album, Cupid Deluxe. Clams Casino, Dirty Projectors and Samantha Urbani (Friends) all make appearances on the album, adding to the already boisterous and hypnotic mesh of funk, soul, and chillwave. Cupid Deluxe comes out on November 18th and you can catch Blood Orange this Friday at 285 Kent.
