Two weeks ago, we asked you, our readers, to nominate your favorite sandwich in and around the neighborhood. In total, 16 sandwiches from 16 different sandwich sellers were nominated. Very impressive indeed.
The nominations covered it all. There was a burger on the list (yes, this was permitted), some vegan options, a wrap and much more.
Last week, we asked you to vote. And the numbers were ridiculous. In total, nearly 5,000 votes were cast. That’s the most engagement we’ve had yet in the Best of Bushwick series. So, for that, we thank you.
The runners up . . .
Coming in third place, with 735 votes, is the pernil crisp wrap at I Like Food. Served up in the back of Aunt Ginny’s bar in Ridgewood (652 Woodward Ave.), the pernil crisp wrap is a delicious mix of pernil (slow-roasted Puerto Rican pork shoulder), jack cheese, avocado cream, sour cream, chipotle mayo, cilantro, pickled red onion, pickled jalapeño, lettuce and tomato. You can add a cup of consomé to the order for just a few bucks. YUM.
In second place, carrying the silver medal, is the Chivito Completo Sandwich at Tabaré Bushwick. Racking up an impressive 1,514 votes, the Chivito Completo is a mouth-watering traditional Uruguayan grass-fed filet mignon sandwich, topped with a fried organic egg, bacon, provolone, black forest ham, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, bibb lettuce, beefsteak tomato, Spanish olives and aioli. WOW.
And . . . drum roll please . . .
The winner of the 2021 best sandwich competition is The Real Cubano Sandwich at
The Real Cubano food truck. Often parked outside of House of Yes on the corner of Wyckoff Avenue and Jefferson Street, this latin-owned food truck serves up a tasty traditional Cuban sandwich (for only $9), good enough to be named the best sandwich in or around the neighborhood. Less than a year old, the truck, which accepts Bitcoin as a form of payment, also offers bowls, empanadas and some delicious sides, including tostones and yuca frita.
“As long as NYC keeps being NYC, no sandwich will overtake a good bagel or a bacon, egg and cheese. However, we are happy and humbled to be picked as one of Bushwick’s best. As recent immigrants, we wanted to bring something classic and authentic, and the audience response was overwhelming. Our The Real Cubano sandwich outsells the rest of our items eight-to-one. It’s about the fresh ingredients and the use of an authentic recipe,” Real Cubano said in response.
