Beer, Literature, and Good Times: 10 Mostly Outdoor Events in Bushwick

Can we all agree that these warmly fresh days are the best time of the year? Let’s enjoy it out in the open air with friends, beer, and good literature and music. Check out our 10 suggested activities to enhance the joy and perception of SPRING!

1. Living Bread Deli makes delicious sandwiches, smoothies and coffee. However, don’t expect a smoothie on Friday night as the deli turns into the coolest music venue! If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out! Moreover tonight, you can show your love for Bushwick Daily and party with us, because we have teamed up with the coolest indie promoter, BirdDog, and prepared a really rad music show case featuring the best local talent. Look forward to  Turnip Kingpow wow!Las RosasThe Teen Age, and Cosmonaut! $8 will get you in and get you some free Narragansett beer!!  

2. Tonight starts the eclectic Bohemian Festival. Gypsies and Balkan music lovers by heart are all coming to Onderdonk Farm House to enjoy good music (Frank London, Yuri Yunakov & The Grand Masters of Gypsy Music, The Klezwoods), belly dance workshops, yoga, body painting and more! The festivities run through Sunday. (Day Pass: $20, Weekend Pass: $30, Tent Pass: $15 )

3. Fireside Follies, the Bushwick truly excellent reading series is celebrating its four years of existence! Curators Mike Lala and Eric Nelson have invited cultural critic and poet Wayne Koestenbaum (Humiliation; Blue Stranger with Mosaic Background), poet Angelo Nikolopoulos (Obscenely Yours), fiction writer and poet Polly Bresnick (Old Gus Eats; Mirror Poems), and poet and artist Simone Kearney. The event is taking place per usual at Brooklyn Fire Proof this Saturday and it’s FREE! Happy birthday!

4. Loom Yoga has introduced free Saturday afternoon meditation session. From 3:30 to 4:30PM, you can join 25-35 minute guided meditation followed by a peer facilitated discussion on meditative practice. “The real source of happiness lies in the mind, not in external circumstances. If our mind is pure and peaceful, well be happy regardless of our external conditions,” writes Margherita from Loom Yoga and we agree.

5. Spring means also A LOT of kittens! Local organization Kitty Karetakers are committed to finding homes for rescue cats from the area. Every Saturday, they host an adoption day at Pet Superette on Cypress Ave. Go play with (and adopt!) those little furry creatures!

6. Bushwick yoga teacher Kristin Mirabelle is transforming a beautiful, spacious garden in Bed Stuy into a community yoga place. On Saturday from 10 to 11AM you can join her and inhale some freshness!

7. Maifest is a traditional German celebration of the arrival of spring! The guys who have been morphing their backyard into an extraordinary Beer Garden are inviting everyone to join them on Saturday from 5PM. Look forward to  lotsa beer, ancient tradition of the Maypole dance and good times. This event is free and BYOB!!

8. The studio tenants of Market Hotel, a legendary community for artists and musicians are moving out to renovate, and are selling the five years worth of stuff. Stop by on Saturday from noon to 8PM for a tag sale.

9. The monthly artisanal flea market, Ridgewood Market, is happening this Sunday from 11AM to 5PM. In the ballroom of Gottscheer Hall in Ridgewood, tens of vendors will be selling cool stuff. Swing on by!

10. The annual Arts in Bushwick Benefit is happening this Sunday from 6 to 9PM at Grace Exhibition Space. In a raffle (1 ticket is $60), you can win artwork donated by over 50 local artists. Loren Munk will be selling the limited edition of “Bushwick Map 2013” prints. The event is catered by French bistro Mominette and beverages are from Brooklyn Brewery and Big Tree Bottles. Admission is free!
