Hurricane Harvey made landfall on August 26 at Rockport, Texas as a Category Four hurricane, spinning up winds of 130 mph and dumping around 40 inches of rain onto parts of the region.
If you’ve been feeling helpless watching the flooding and devastation on television, know that there’s a way to help tonight at a dance fundraiser at Bizarre Bar to support people and organizations cleaning up the region which suffered up to $190 billion of damage.
Organizers say they are “uniting together to stand (and dance) in solidarity with those who’ve been impacted by last week’s catastrophic flooding, to raise critically-needed funds for the nonprofits and relief effort groups providing aid and resources to the massive number of people, wildlife and life sustaining infrastructures impacted by last week’s catastrophic flooding of Houston and surrounding areas.”
Christina Rochelle, a Houston native living in Brooklyn tells Bushwick Daily, “Being on the outside looking in on a city and it’s residents powerless to the force of mother nature, it is a difficult thing to witness. In this time, Texas and the surrounding areas are in need of all the help they can get. As a Houstonian watching from afar, every little bit helps.”
Ten local DJs will be spinning an eclectic mix of music tonight between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. in addition to some live painting by Adal of Majestic Tattoo NYC.
If you can’t come tonight, consider donating directly to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, the Houston Food Bank, or the Houston Humane Society.
But if you can, come out and show your support in addition to buying drinks at a bar already donating 10 percent of its profits to the relief effort.
Rochelle adds, “The people of Brooklyn and New York as a whole have been incredibly invested and helpful since the beginning, it has shown a beautiful and real side of humanity and what we can do together, united.”
