Sunrise/Sunset: On a Quiet Corner on Evergreen, a Wine Bar and Brunch Spot Begins to Blossom

Sunrise/Sunset popped up cool as a cucumber on a quiet corner on Evergreen Ave a couple of months ago, and since then, they’ve been serving up serenity and cheer, along with booze and caffeine.

A carefully curated selection of spirits.

For the Sunrise part of the vision, the café opens up at 8:30AM Tuesday through Friday (they’re still closed on Mondays), and offers a full range of caffeinated delights, as well as croissants and muffins and other baked goods.

Cocktails are about $10, and glasses of wine range from $6 to $11. The owner Henry Glucroft strives to keep his prices relatively affordable, without sacrificing quality.

Everything in Sunrise/Sunset is done up in coral blue and buttercup yellow, as if to evoke the bright shadows of dawn and dusk, and providing a sweet departure from the typical Bushwick aesthetic. And so perhaps it’s no surprise that the owner Henry Glucroft has shunned the typical Bushwick locales: he isn’t propping himself up in Jefftown, or shimmying into the current batch of exciting new bars in Dekalbtown. Instead, he opened with only a slight murmur and is expanding his offerings slowly and thoughtfully. Henry opted to kick things off with the Sunset portion of the business, with an extremely well curated selection of wines (he is also the owner of Henry’s Wine & Spirit, so he knows la vino), a beer list that’ll get you tipsy, and a radical cocktail menu.

While there, I sipped on two cocktails, both delightful. The strongest was the Little Red Crown, with gin and apple brandy. The red sat diabolically in the bottom of the quaint glass, and the drink was deliciously tart.

Although they don’t have a full menu during the week, they are selling a tremendous brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, with a French Toast Monte Cristo ($11) which, coupled with one of their $6 (!!) Bloody Mary’s or mimosas seems like the most delicious way to induce a really life-shattering afternoon nap.

The Retourner, in all its glory.

Happy Hour runs from 5 to 8 PM daily, and during that time, you can get a dollar off drafts and wells and, most importantly, 20% off bottles of wine!
