Molly’s Milk Truck is finally and officially open. But if you thought the food truck-turned-restaurant was only serving up ice cream and sweets, you’d be very mistaken.
After months of longingly staring at Molly’s Milk Truck’s shuttered storefront from Three Diamond Door’s front window, I was more than excited to finally sample the Milk Truck menu. I was expecting a short list of classic items like burgers, fries and soft serve, so naturally I was impressed when I walked in to a barista whipping up a gorgeous flat white, and saw a floor-to-ceiling chalkboard, detailing Molly’s breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. I got very excited.
I was even more impressed by the volume of regulars in the place. Molly’s Milk Truck founder and CEO Hoda Mahmoodzadegan was shooting the breeze with a couple of them before turning to me to suggest a few of her menu favorites. “The burger is really good, but everyone is talking about the Hot Chick,” she said. So I went with the Hot Chick.
Molly’s Hot Chick sandwich is exactly what it sounds like; it’s a spicy fried chicken sandwich, piled with cucumbers, cilantro scallion salad, and kewpie mayo on a black sesame milk bun. I’ve had my fair share of fried chicken delicacies, but the Hot Chick was exceptionally flavorful. I was particularly fond of the extra crunch provided by the cucumbers and cilantro scallion salad. I am nothing if not a sucker for unconventional sandwich toppings.
The only downside to the Hot Chick is the overwhelming number of sesame seeds I may still be picking out of my hair—my fault for eating too enthusiastically.
I didn’t want to let the carbs have all the fun, so after some deliberation I also ordered a kale salad with grilled chicken. Mahmoodzadegan went into detail about Molly’s homemade salad dressing and I couldn’t say no.
Molly’s Curly Kale Salad is one of those items that is painfully overlooked because it has “kale” in its name. Which is a shame because this particular salad was amazing. Fresh kale, sunflower seeds, parmigiano reggiano, and Molly’s house dressing all come together to make boring stereotypical hipster roughage look sexy. It was also very delicious.
Finally, I couldn’t go to Molly’ Milk Truck without picking up a few desserts. I went with my gut and ordered the “Matcha Matcha Man” ice cream sundae, which comes with crunchy honeycomb and the “PB13,” a peanut butter and jelly ice cream sandwich.
The matcha was very refreshing, especially for a summer day that had temps reaching into the 90s, and the PB13 took me back to memories of eating elementary school lunch—and also being broke and lazy in college. Both were amazing and creative flavors that anyone would be crazy not to try.
We’re more than excited that Molly’s Milk Truck is finally opened and serving up an awesome, extensive menu. Next time I’m definitely stopping by for breakfast.
