Bushwick has another new barbershop for all the boys’ traditional barber needs! On Bushwick Ave- in the old Harvest Cyclery location- now sits Grandfathered Barber Shop, a family-owned, truly old-school business for close cuts and shaves.
Owner Duval Lawton and his father, Norman Lawton, own the spot. Their family has been in the business for generations. Back in Jamaica, where their roots are, Norman and his own father both owned barbershops, so Duval always grew up around it. The moved to the states when Duval was five but remained as barbers but had to give up their own shop.
Duval apprenticed in East New York where he grew up before eventually going to barber school then working in shops around the city. “after working for 8 years I felt I had enough experience,” Duval explains. He told his father “I’d really like to continue the family legacy” by opening their own place.
The space, on the corner of Bushwick Avenue, and Jefferson Street, is clean, bright, and modern with vintage accents. There are fully restored Koken barber chairs from 1910, a vintage high chair for kids’ cuts, and photos of Duval’s father and grandfather at their shop back in Jamaica. Full services start around $20 for a shave or buzz and cap at $30 for a full haircut with a hot towel and razor clean-up.
If you’re looking for a real old-school barber experience with bona fide old-schools pros, look no further than Grandfathered Barbers.
