The New York City Emergency Management and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene are urging city residents to take extra precautions to stay cool this week.

According to a press release from the Office of the Mayor of New York, there’s a heat advisory up until this Wednesday, July 4.

The release outlined that “temperatures today are in the upper 90s, with heat index values in excess of 100 degrees. Temperatures are forecast in the mid to upper 90s through Wednesday, with heat index values in the mid to upper 90s.”

Combined with the humidity, outdoor temperatures are expected to feel like it is at 105 degrees or higher.

The dog days of NYC’s summer are finally here and vulnerable residents, such as young children, older residents, and people with chronic health issues, need to take extra precautions to stay cool and hydrated.

“Hot and humid weather like what we’re experiencing this weekend can cause heat illness, and even death,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. “For those without air conditioning, especially older adults and people with chronic health conditions, we urge you to seek an air-conditioned place in your neighborhood or go to a NYC Cooling Center.”

Cooling centers are libraries, community centers, and senior centers.

Anyone who is unsure of where a cooling center is near them can go to the NYC Cooling Center Finder online or call 311 for more information.
