Have you ever been harassed by your landlord? Not sure?

You can learn about New York housing laws, deed theft, and how to combat tenant harassment at a community forum tonight from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Riseboro's Youth Center at 1474 Gates Ave. in Bushwick.

Bushwick Assemblywoman Maritza Davila and several attorneys from New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office will be among the speakers at this town hall event. There will also be an intake session in which community members can obtain individual legal advice. All are invited to attend.

Tenant harassment happens when landlords create uncomfortable conditions that make their residents break a rental contract. Landlords who use this strategy often do so to avoid costly legal expenses and other potential problems with eviction.

Bushwick Daily has covered the issue of tenant harassment and abusive landlords extensively. In October, we reported on how Mayor de Blasio was pumping $1 million into the Tenant Support Unit, a team that provides door-to-door outreach to low-income residents facing eviction and landlord harassment. In November, we covered the publication of the 2017 Landlord Watchlist and found that two of the 10-worst landlords in the city own numerous properties in Bushwick.

Still not sure if you've been harassed? Then check out a classic Bushwick Daily comic by Jeremy Nguyen, "Signs Your Landlord Wants You to Leave."
