In May of 2015, radio is a lovingly old-fashioned medium. Old-fashioned but in a way that will hardly go out of fashion.

And so “to build a communication infrastructure to strengthen the community of artists who have been driven from the Manhattan neighborhoods before being scattered to the corners of the boroughs,” is the goal of new Radio Free Brooklyn, which has announced their launch to take place on May 13, 2015.

This Bushwick-based radio station is broadcasting from the basement of Brooklyn-Velo Bike Shop at 1345a Dekalb Ave, and can be listened to at radiofreebrooklyn.com; and is operated by Robert Prichard (producer of Radical Vaudeville and former proprietor of Surf Reality) and Tom Tenney (the founder of the RE/Mixed Media Festival).

Currently offering only pre-recorded shows, Radio Free Brooklyn will go live after during its launch party at Lucky 13 Saloon at 644 Sackett St., Gowanus at 9pm.

To give you an idea of the kinds of shows that RFB will broadcast: the first season of Live from the Hipster Triangle, hosted by comedian Liam McEneany; Lunch with Legs, a live bi-weekly talk show hosted by burlesque artist Legs Malone; and The Brooklyn Curmudgeon Hour, a weekly roundtable on community issues, featuring a rotating panel of borough residents.

They will also offer free promotion to Brooklyn-based businesses in the form of station IDs recorded by local business owners.

In the meantime, residents who wish to submit a show for consideration may do so at their website.
