Treat Yo’Self: Self Salon Opens in Bushwick

Treat Yo'Self: Self Salon Opens in Bushwick

All hail the hair Gods- Williamsburg hair mainstay Self Salon has just opened a Bushwick location at 42 Wilson Ave. With high ceilings, pristine white walls, fresh mason jars of flowers, and a zen-like minimalism, it’s at home within Bushwick ‘s artful scene. I stopped by to scope Bushwick’s first truly upscale salon, and got my hair cut by Barbara, whose broad cosmetology knowledge influenced me to try a sleek new look.

Self, an OG establishment of Williamsburg, opened its location on Grand Street almost 10 years ago back in 2004. This year, they decided to open a location in Bushwick because, as owner Maria Barca stated dreamily: “I was inspired by the neighborhood.” Both she and co-owner (and husband) Alex Hoffman grew up in neighboring Ridgewood, Queens and dreamed of having a salon in Bushwick to match the fast-paced artistic and creative energy of the neighborhood. The salon officially opened just over two weeks ago, just days after the birth of their brand new son, Jaxx. If you’re lucky, you might get to sneak a peak of him hanging quietly onto his mama behind the reception desk. You might even catch an awww-prompting baby yawn!

Down to business: this salon provides an experience that’ll make you a loyal customer on the first cut. During your appointment you’ll feel at home in a comfy salon chair, having easy conversation with your hairdresser, sipping on Lemon Thyme soda from Hops & Hocks. Haircuts run $65 for women and $40 for men, reasonably priced for Williamsburg and a tad high for Bushwick, but they’re well worth it. Cuts also come with free bang trims, so you can stay fresh without the hefty price of fringe maintenance. I mentioned that I only cut my tresses every six months so my hairdresser trimmed with the intention of letting my hair grow out in a flattering way.

Color is also one of Self’s high-end offerings, with a single process running $65 for roots and $85 for whole head. They also offer double processes, color corrections, and other various styles of dying. Judging by the funky flair of Maria’s purple hombre above, they will do custom and unusual color dyes as well, matching your vision with the talents of your hairdresser. Atop color, they do an array of treatments including an Unlimited Monthly Blowout Package (what!), and offer a full line of heavenly products from Sachajuan out of Stockholm.
