Bushwick Daily is excited to premiere “Godspeed,” the title track from Shadow Year’s forthcoming second EP. Known around Brooklyn for their strong work ethic (they were recognized as one of Audio Femme’s Hardest Working DIY Bands of 2019), the band impressed in 2019 with their first full-length, Hush Hush Panic, a mesmerizing debut that showcased their affinity for a variety of compelling sonic elements: soothing ethereal tones, jangly guitars, and powerful multi-perspective vocal performances. With this multi-faceted approach, the band weaved their sound in and out of multiple genres, drawing on matter-of-fact post-punk, whirling shoegaze, and celestial dream-pop – using pieces of each to formulate their own identity.
Similarly, “Godspeed” showcases the band’s eclectic sound and sonic adventurism. Shadow Year hones in on the strength of the dual vocal dynamic between Scout Gilette and Tyler Wright on “Godspeed”, as the heartfelt interplay of their voices anchors and steers the song. Yearning synths nicely complement their harmonies, and the lyrical refrain “first thing in the morning, last thing at night,” is perfectly representative of the track’s hazy mood, as it captures the gentle lull of those twilight hours.
