Latinx Punk Festival 2016 Brings DIY Ethos to East Williamsburg

August is upon us, which means most of us are already wishing for an end to hot temps and air conditioner workarounds. But it’s still festival season, and this weekend’s 2016 Latino Punk Festival promises to provide three packed days of performances from all over the world.

The international event features bands from three continents. On the first night alone, Don Pedro, the East Williamsburg music venue/eatery, will host Final from Colombia, Ninos Rata from Canada, Nunhex from Miami, Favela Rising from Minneapolis, and Rumores from Chicago, along with some NYC bands.

In its third year, the festival will also feature a series of panel discussions as part of the events. Topics of the panels will try to answer the broader question of how countercultures can unite against common oppressors. The event promises to address sexism, racism, and gentrification.

The line-ups, focus on DIY culture, and commitment to eschewing sponsorship make this a far cry from last weekend’s Panorama Festival where even the port-a-potties got an upgrade.

Tickets range from anywhere between $5 to $20, and performances are spread out over two venues. The full schedule is below:
