What’s up, Bushwick!! As I’m sure you’re well aware, the first weekend in June is traditionally epic in this neighborhood. Big awesome events, which used to be held in conjunction with Bushwick Open Studios, continue on after the massive Bushwick art event moves to October.
Here’s what awaits you this weekend:
#1 Duh… Bushwick Block Party (SAT-SUN 11AM-5PM, $free)
Troutman St. & St. Nicholas Ave, Bushwick
A huge, mega-awesome photographer’s dream, Bushwick Collective Block Party brings together street art, music, food and drink. The party goes on all weekend: so make sure to swing by and have the time of your life. Look forward to performers Chris Rivers, Joell Ortiz, Dave East, Tournament and DJ Statik Selektah & Friends. Live painting on the Bushwick walls (the ones that are not yet covered by billboards that it) will be done by D*Face, Giz, Case Maclaim, Crash One and many, many others. Expect also vendors’ market section, food trucks, beer tents, raffles, body paint, free face paint for kids, and don’t forget a sunscreen–you’ll need it!
#2 OMG….. Color Me Bushwick (FRI-SUN 12:30-11:15PM, $free, donations accepted)
61-63 Wyckoff Ave, Bushwick
If you thought that hair coloring and three-day music and community festival are anything but related, think again. The ladies behind Pickthorn, NYC’s premier hair colorist studio Chelsey Pickthorn and Jocelyn Simone, are throwing their third annual event that fuses hair, lifestyle, beauty and party. Featuring more than 30 bands, most of which are local faves such as Sharkmuffin and The Nuclears, Color Me Bushwick’s salon will be hosting and refreshing you with PBRs, Bruce’s Ginger Lemonade, and Red Bull.
Micheal Breach will be doing baristart, AKA painting your face on a latte, and Phil Buehler will let you step into his 3D Space Oddity Panorama.
#3 YUM…. Chock A Block Party (SAT 1PM, SUN 12PM, $free)
288 Seigel St, East Williamsburg
We wouldn’t mind if the first weekend of June turned out to be a weekend of multiple awesome block parties, and so in this vein, Bushwick’s beloved chocolate factory, Fine & Raw, is throwing a sweet block party as well. They will be presenting some of New York’s tastiest house DJs (William Roy, Jen Orlando, MPL, MDG, Nikki, Jordan James, Moe.Bpm) as well as a choco-boozy milkshake bar, freshly pressed sandwiches from Brooklyn Bread Lab, and lots of beer, wine and love!
#4 Yay…… Bushwick Collective Art Fair (opening FRI 7PM-12AM, open SAT-SUN 10AM-5PM)
198 Randolph St, East Williamsburg
Bushwick Collective is not only about partying: They have prepared a giant East Williamsburg warehouse to feature four art shows: one from the Parsons School of Art and Design, one by the Museum of the City of New York, and one called Beyond the Walls–a curated Bushwick Collective show. The final show? An Artists of 11237 Exhibit, which will feature artists selected from amongst the submissions from Brooklyn’s 11237 ZIP code.
UPDATE: Sorry folks! It turns out that La Playa NYC won’t open this weekend yet. More info here.
#5 Gulp… La Playa NYC opens! (SAT 12PM, $free)
176 Woodward Ave, Ridgewood
Beach? Party? Staying local? If you want all of three components to be a part of your weekend, we suggest you swing by this formerly empty 5,000 square foot lot at 176 Woodward Ave in Ridgewood. Rockaway Brewing Company is launching La Playa NYC, a pop-up beer garden, which promises to be quite something! The first day is Saturday at noon, afterwards, regular hours are Sunday-Thursdays 5pm-12am, Fridays & Saturdays noon-12am.
#6 Wee.. Bushwick Community Day (SUN 12-6PM, $free)
Irving Square Park, Bushwick
Arts in Bushwick are inviting everybody to Irving Square Park (bordered by Weirfield St, Halsey St, Knickerbocker Ave and Wilson Ave) for a day of kids activities and performances by musicians, artists, and poets in the park. Expect yoga, music, performance art, vendors, face-painting and a lot more.
#7 And this… Bushwick Arts Festival (FRI-SUN 12PM-10PM)
Bushwick
After Bushwick Open Studios decided to postpone till October, Brandon Mickman, who runs local blog Bushwick Bomb, announced he’s throwing a mini-version of the open studio event. With about 25 participating spaces, Bushwick Arts Festival is debuting this weekend as well. Some of the participating artist spaces include Cotton Candy Machine (43 Porter Ave), Brilliant Champions (5 Central Ave) or The Rack Shack at 155 Central Ave.
#8 Aaaah… NYC Porn Festival (SAT-SUN 9:30AM-10:30PM, indiv. screenings $12, weekend pass $89)
315 Ten Eyck Street, East Williamsburg
The first weekend of June is just as good as any to binge on porn. The second year of NYC Porn Festival, which brings titillation with a touch of controversy, is going down in an unassuming East Williamsburg warehouse. Look forward to virtual reality porn, bike smut (because obvi we love our bikes and therefore that’s a thing) or “financial domination.”
Have a great weekend, Bushwick!
