Whether you love it or hate it, the Hallmark holiday is indeed this Sunday: Valentine’s Day, The day of bodega flowers, Fine and Raw Chocolate, and those couples blowing up your Facebook feed professing their love for each other (“#blessed!!”). You may be chronically single or madly in love, but both camps can have fun this weekend!
#10 Madeline Mondrala,CITRIS, Help Me Help You, Nica @ Muchmore’s, 2 Havemeyer St. Williamsburg (Fri, 8PM, $8)
First of all, #girlpower. Not only does this lineup include some kickass ladies: proceeds will go towards female education in Peru (in coordination with Souljourn Yoga). Treat yo’ self to a good Friday night, and be sure to have one of Muchmore’s soju cocktails!
#9 Wonderwheel Recordings 12 Year Anniversary: Nickodemus, Quantic, DRM @ House of Yes, 2 Wyckoff Ave. Bushwick (Fri, 9PM, $20)
Celebrate the last twelve years with Brooklyn-based Wonderwheel Recordings, founded by Nickodemus himself. Live DJs, belly dancers and aerialists will be amongst the eclectic performances. Haven’t made it over to the House of Yes yet? Now is your excuse to rave.
#8 The Soft Moon, Container, Uniform @ Market Hotel, 1140 Myrtle Ave. Bushwick (Sat, 8PM, $15)
Market Hotel strikes again with a stacked lineup. Luis Vasquez, aka Oakland-based project The Soft Moon, can be relied on to deliver loud, synthy post-punk which manages to be both danceable and bittersweet. Reviews are positive for Soft Moon’s most recent album, Deeper, which will most likely lead you through a dark, psychedelic tunnel (other than the JMZ).
#7 Third Annual Bushwick Love Party @ Fine and Raw Chocolate Factory, 288 Seigel St. East Williamsburg (Fri, 8PM, $15)
DJs, comedy, belly dancing, burlesque, live nude sketches and chocolate – in collaboration with your favorite Bushwick businesses. You really can’t go wrong. Fine and Raw Chocolate, Little Skips and 108 Lives Project are teaming up to present their annual Bushwick Love Party, from which proceeds help rebuild rural Nepal. Go to a killer party, donate to a good cause. That’s called a win-win, right?
Blonde Redhead @ Rough Trade, 64 N 9th St. Williamsburg (Thurs, 8PM, $20)
You know Blonde Redhead will bring it hard this Thursday for their hometown show. They’ve been working on new material, so there’s always the chance some songs could premier live at the intimately sized Rough Trade. Also, they’re also holding a Baby’s All Right after-party, which means you have two opportunities to get your Blonde Redhead fix!
#5 Hypnocraft Presents: TEEN Record Release, Becca Kauffman, Miho Hatori’s New Optimism, Gemma @ Union Pool, 484 Union Ave. Williamsburg (Sun, 8PM, $10)
The Brookyn-based ladies in TEEN are at it again. Valentine’s Day for a Love Yes record release show? Genius. If their upcoming album is anything like their newest single, “Free Time,” we’re in for electronic pop songs that somehow manage to sound sixties-influenced while also extremely innovative.
#4 INPUT Presents OUTLIER: Bonobo (Open To Close) @ Output, 74 Wythe Ave. Williamsburg (Thurs, 10PM, $25)
Bonobo is playing from open to close. If anyone wasn’t sure, at Output, that means from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. A glorious, six hour, non-stop party (or maybe “marathon” is a more appropriate word). Work may be tough the next morning, but it’ll be 100% worth it.
#3 Jukely Presents: Mitski, Mal Devisa, 100% @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn, 361 Metropolitan Ave. Williamsburg (Sun, 8PM)
This night is going to be one for the books. The magical human Mitski, playing on no lesser occasion than Valentine’s Day. Couples and single people alike will be crying tears of joy as Mitski invigorates your soul. If you’ve never heard of Mitski, consider this a PSA to check her out.
#2 Annual Valentine’s Day Planned Parenthood of NYC Benefit Concert & Dance: Village of Love @ Music Hall of Williamsburg, 66 N 6th St. Williamsburg (Sun, 7:30PM, $20)
Go do some good this Valentine’s Day and in return, see a sick show. Music Hall of Williamsburg is hosting their annual benefit for Planned Parenthood this Sunday. The lineup pretty much screams GO SEE THIS – Mac DeMarco, Skaters and Delicate Steve, to name a few.
#1 Sunday Sessions – Valium Valentine, Andrew Wyatt and Sarah Ortmeyer (with guests) @ MoMA PS1, 22-25 Jackson Ave, Long Island City (Sun, 12PM, $15)
Note that the “guests” for this event include Hisham Bharoocha, Xander Duell, Heather Goldin of Beau, Damon McMahon aka Amen Dunes, Lykke Li, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Empress Of, Akwetey O.T. of D.O.Z., Zanna Van Vorstenbosch, Charli XCX and Nick Zinner. WHAT.
Ummmm, you should probably go to this. A six hour show – where Andrew Wyatt (Miike Snow’s lead singer) brings each of his guests on stage to improvise with him. Talk about a one-time only event.
Happy vee day, Bushwick! xoxo, Bushwick Daily.
