14 anti-ICE protesters arrested after blocking the Brooklyn Bridge over the shooting of Oscar Belgal

Activists sat in the Brooklyn-bound lanes on the Manhattan side Oct. 28 to demand Belgal's release and an end to NYPD cooperation with ICE. ICE agents shot Belgal in the neck in Marble Hill Oct. 8 with his 5-year-old son in the car. DHS says its agents acted in self-defense.

A coalition of activist groups blocked an entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, in a demonstration against the shooting of Oscar Belgal by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, and the New York Police Department arrested 14 people, police said.

The protesters demanded the release of Belgal, a 28-year-old immigrant from the Dominican Republic who was shot in the neck by an ICE agent on October 8 in Manhattan’s Marble Hill neighborhood while his 5-year-old son sat in the back seat of his car. They also called on the NYPD to stop cooperating with federal immigration authorities.
