The city says rip currents at Brooklyn and Queens beaches could be life-threatening July 1. If one grabs you, don’t swim against it

Notify NYC issued a warning June 30 about life-threatening rip currents likely at surf zones across Brooklyn and Queens from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM on July 1, according to an alert forwarded by Community Board BK01.

Notify NYC says rip currents “can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water” and urges people not to swim at red-flagged beaches where a lifeguard is not present.

If caught in a rip current, the alert says not to swim directly against the current. Instead, Notify NYC recommends relaxing and floating, or swimming parallel to the shoreline if possible, until you’re clear of the current.

The latest rip current risk forecast for the New York area is available at weather.gov/beach/okx.

Notify NYC alerts are available in thirteen languages including Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Haitian Creole, and Yiddish. Residents can update their language preference at on.nyc.gov/change-language or sign up to receive future alerts through the Notify NYC referral page. Questions or concerns can be directed to [email protected].
