You, too, can enjoy being sweaty! Take a lesson from MJ and get your music fix!

Articles about crowded subways and the worst things about summer in NYC have been popping up all over the place. Do we agree with them? Totally. New York is DISGUSTING this time of year. However, summer has brought us some good shows so far, and the free ones and mini-festivals just keep coming. We attended Northside, FMLY Fest, 4knots, Back to the Beach, 1.21 Gigawatts Festival as well as a bunch of other independently booked shows and festivals. Now in our second week of July, the music just keeps pumping! Check out these top shows for the weekend!

Head over to Bossa Nova this Thursday for Industry of Machine’s residency night featuring Torn Hawk of L.I.E.S.! Cheap drinks too! After all, it’s almost Friday!

9. Sunset Guns / Sharkmuffin / The Planes @ Fort Useless (SAT 8PM, $5 suggested donation)

Bushwick’s Fort Useless hosts a night of hard rock ‘n grunge. Sharkmuffin always gives a raw performance with punk influences and riot grrrl energy!

7. Celestial Shore / Each Other / Icewater / Video Paradise @ Silent Barn (FRI 8PM, $7)

We’ve been hearing a lot about psychedelic band Icewater, who blend gorgeous ’70s style vocal harmonies with beautiful guitar plucks, and a dreamy, slowed down tempo. Go see them at Silent Barn on Friday!

6. Hippy / Marl0n Rand0 / Freecare / Sink Tapes / D0g Water @ Big Sn0w (FRI 8PM, $7)

Speaking of hippie music, don’t think of Brooklyn band Hippy because they rock more of an urban, surf rock vibe. They also know how to be the musical life of the party! Fun!

5. Various Artists @ Over The Eight (FRI 10PM, FREE)

Mysterious, but enticing. Come hear/be part of a musical collaboration like never before! Worth the trek to Williamsburg.

4. Nap0lean / Spires / Jangula / Grand Res0rt @ Shea Stadium (SAT 8PM, $8)

Spires is one of the best new psychedelic rock bands in Brooklyn! Ay ay ay!

If you’re looking for some hip hop, the Paper Box is where you should stop this weekend…One line convinced us of this (via BKLYNKATHY’s bio): BLKKATHY wants to make your booty bounce and ruin your makeup.

2. Sacred Bones presents Hair Police, Pharmakon, Alberich, and Hollow Seed @ 285 Kent (FRI, 8pm, $10 adv $12 dos)

Hair police came all the way from Lexington, Kentucky so you better get your ass out to this show!

1. Toro y Moi / Shlohmo /Jonwayne @ House of Vans (THUR, 6PM, FREE)

This is one show to make! Aside from the fact that it’s free, it’s a great line up. Chazwick Bradley Bundick aka Toro y Moi encompasses the smooth, synth-pop, chillwave vibe that was extremely popular in 2010. He just released his third record, Anything in Return, this January. Shlohmo, who is based in LA, intricately weaves together beats and samples from instruments and various songs to create something totally unique. Get in line early though! Limited capacity!
