If there’s one New Years resolution we should have, it’s to lock our doors, because Bushwick had the most burglaries in 2015. As of Dec. 27 there were 463 burglaries in Bushwick this year, more than any other neighborhood in the city, statistics show.

Averaging roughly ten per week, we can attribute these burglaries to new residents leaving their doors and windows unlocked, according to 83rd Precinct’s Commanding Officer Maximo A. Tolentino. Trailing behind East New York and Williamsburg, Bushwick saw a slight decrease in robberies from 2014, but still significant enough to merit a warning. Most of the incidents reported were not forced entry.

Yet it wasn’t just residents leaving doors and windows unlocked. Tolentino cites Bushwick’s architecture as a common problem of burglaries. Row-houses and small apartment buildings linked by fire escapes and connected by rooftops make it easier for robbers.

On a whole, crime dropped 7% from last year and all crimes saw decreases except for rapes, which increased by five this time last year.
