Success Stories: Ridgewood’s Standard Physical Therapy

In December 2022, Dr. Amr Elbegrmi, the owner and director of Standard Physical Therapy, set up his practice on Troutman Avenue, on the Ridgewood-Bushwick border. This new office provides high quality physical therapy right in the heart of these two bordering communities, making essential health services more accessible to local residents.

Dr. Amr has an impressive educational background, having earned a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Dominican College of Blauvelt, NY. He went on to specialize further through a rigorous two year Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program at Touro College, where he received Certification in Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy (CAOPT). Dr. Amr combines these academic accomplishments with personal experience in athletics; an aspect that enhances his unique perspective and ability to assist patients in recovery and achieving peak performance.

Dr. Amr has had a distinguished physical therapy career, contributing significantly to the community both within his clinic and beyond. He carries 15 years of experience as a practicing physical therapist, treating conditions ranging from shoulder, knee, and ankle injuries (both surgical and nonsurgical) to cardiopulmonary disorders. “I want to provide specialized care for not just sports injuries but also orthopedic issues like fractures; post-surgery recovery; tears of important ligaments like the ACL; other significant problems that people have with their bodies when they do not quite function as they are supposed to. Everyone of all ages is welcome to bring their concerns to us,” he says.

Dr. Amr’s passion for physical therapy is deeply personal. When he was a teenager, around the age of 15 or 16, he experienced his first sports injury while playing soccer. With the help of a talented physical therapist, he was able to fully recover and return to play, a turning point that opened up a new career path for him.

“When I was injured, all I wanted to know was when I could get back on the field. That experience made me realize how crucial it is for patients to have a clear timeline for their recovery. I believe in providing detailed plans and realistic timelines to help people return to their lives safely and with confidence. Someone did that for me and now I can pass on that care to others. It’s not just about getting back to sports. It’s about getting back to doing what you love, whether that’s playing a game or simply enjoying daily activities,” Dr. Amr explains.

Dr. Amr’s personal pathway in the world of sports began in Egypt, where he played first division professional soccer. Upon relocating to the United States, he continued to play soccer at a semi professional level. Today, he is a stalwart of the New York International Football Club, that plays in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, and is a proud recipient of the sponsorship of Standard Physical Therapy. With their head Nick Platt, the team got promoted to the league’s D1 division. Dr. Amr is also the team’s physical therapist. Dr. Amr integrates his life as an athlete and that of a professional to support both his teammates and patients, during the game and when post-recovery care is needed.

Dr. Amr’s dedication to the field of physical therapy and his desire to achieve excellence were also evidenced by his presence at the prestigious FIFA Under 20 World Cup in 2009. There, he served as a physical therapist for the young men who were competing. In the course of his work during that event, he developed a better understanding of who and what kinds of demands are placed on the performers at the very top of the game.

After 15 years working in the field, Dr. Amr knows how difficult it can be for people who need specialized care to sustainably attain it locally. The physical therapy office accepts most major insurance plans. “Many of my patients used to travel to Manhattan for treatment because there wasn’t a local option that really focused on sports,” Dr. Amr shares. “Now, sports enthusiasts in the neighborhood can finally get the expert care they need right here, without leaving their community.” He adds, “I want to get Bushwick and Ridgewood locals back to doing what they love, whether that’s playing D1 soccer or simply enjoying a weekend stroll through Maria Hernandez Park.” His practice is designed to ensure that quality care is available to all, making it easier for residents to recover from injuries, manage pain, and maintain their lifestyles without leaving their community.

As a proud local, supporting the nearby sports scene is also a vital part of Dr. Amr’s life. He is a sponsor of the popular Ridgewood Runners club, whose community we profiled last November. Dr. Amr plays an active role in promoting the well-being and performance of its members, reflecting his belief in the importance of supporting both local athletes and the broader community’s health.

For almost two years, Dr. Amr has been bringing his expertise in specialized physical therapy to Bushwick and Ridgewood, serving a broad cross section of people in need of surgical recovery, chronic pain management, or preventative musculoskeletal care. His patients run the gamut. They include top athletes, and everyday folks who sit behind a desk for eight hours. A firm believer that everyone deserves to feel their best, Dr. Amr is looking to help people provide that with a person who not only has an extensive physical therapy background but also deeply admires the community he serves.
