Picture this: you’re heading home, you want to get a cheap drink but you don’t want to put up with the noisy atmosphere of most bars in Bushwick. You basically wish you could go to a hipster version of Cheers, where it feels like a home away from home. Enter The Evergreen, a retro dive bar at Moffat and Evergreen Streets, where not only will you be greeted by friendly bartenders and locals, but you’ll be transported to the woods at the same time.

This place has the charm of a local bar that you can get cheery with new and old friends. The laid back vibe of The Evergreen is pretty evident in the place’s low lights, artful decor, and upbeat playlist, and even through the history of the bar itself. Casey Spindler, a Bushwick local and co-owner of The Evergreen, told me that he and the other Evergreen owners are good chums.

“We’re former, and current bartenders who have worked together for years and finally had a chance to open our own place,” said Casey. Along with The Evergreen, the group owns The Fulton Grand in Clinton Hill, and Fourth Avenue Pub in Park Slope. Corey Noble, another owner we encountered on a second visit, was equally excited about the opening of the bar and its potential to turn into a real neighborhood watering hole.

In terms of drinks, you’re pretty golden. The Evergreen has a full bar, 12 rotating taps, an assortment of bottled beers, ciders, wines, and an impressive bourbon selection- including rarities Beacon and Ryemaggedon. The bar also offers five signature cocktails under $10, one of which is called the Absolut Jackass ($9) — a vodka take on the Moscow Mule, including Absolut Premium, a lime wedge, topped off with some Ginger Beer. And yes, in case you were wondering, The Evergreen supports its local Bushwick Braven brew, with drafts of Braven White IPA ($6) and other great taps like Sixpoint.

Besides the good vibes and offerings already in place, additional great things are on the horizon, including a menu of small plates and appetizers (look out for some specialty dips!), three more taps being added to the mix, and a patio for the Spring. Don’t forget to check out The Evergreen’s Happy Hour, one of the best in town! On Mondays-Fridays from 4pm-9pm, and Saturdays-Sundays from 4pm-8pm, the bar offers $2 off well drinks and drafts, $3 well shots, and $2 Narraganset.

The Evergreen is located at 109 Moffat St (corner of Evergreen Ave and Moffat St.) in Bushwick. Hours: Monday-Sunday, 4pm-4am.
