Today, Friday, Oct. 29, marks the deadline for New York City workers to get vaccinated, a mandate that they must adhere to or face being put on unpaid leave. The most recent mandate applies to about 160,000 city workers. Other city workers, including Department of Education (DOE) and New York City Health and Hospitals (H+H) workers, have been subject to vaccine mandates since late September.
So, how effective have these vaccine mandates been in encouraging those living in and around Bushwick to get vaccinated?
To get an idea, we pulled the most recent city data regarding local vaccination rates and compared it to the local vaccination rates reported in late September, around the same time the DOE and H+H mandates went into effect.
In brief, Bushwick vaccination rates have increased substantially in the short time period. Over the course of about a month, the percentage of individuals living in and around Bushwick who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 has risen to nearly 59 percent, while 66 percent have received at least one dose, according to city data. Those are increases of just under 6 percent and 5 percent, respectively.
However, it is hard to say, with certainty, how big of a role the mandates, alone, have played in boosting the numbers, as they only apply to city workers. And they are not the sole motivator for getting vaccinated.
Let’s break the numbers down by zip code.
