Editor’s note: These are the current Covid numbers, as of Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.

As we welcome in the new year, Covid-19 cases across Bushwick and all of New York City are spiking to levels that we haven’t seen before. Likewise, the number of hospitalizations and deaths in the area are also increasing. However, deaths and hospitalizations remain low when compared to previous spikes.

Before diving into the numbers, make sure you’re aware of the brick-and-mortar and mobile testing sites available in Bushwick and across the city. To stay up to date, check here and here. Also, note that at-home Covid testing is available to all immunocompromised New Yorkers and those ages 65 and older. To schedule an at-home appointment, New Yorkers can call (929) 298-9400 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. any day of the week.

The city also has a Covid vaccine finder tool, available here

Now, the current Covid numbers.

As of today, Jan. 3, the current positivity rate in New York City is 33.49 percent. Every day, 26,817 people across New York City are testing positive for the virus, while 492 people are being sent to the hospital and 19 people are dying daily. In Bushwick’s primary zip codes, 11237 and 11221, the most recent positivity rates are 37.7 percent and 34.36 percent, respectively. All of this is according to city data, which is collected by the NYC Health Department and updated daily.

Below are some graphs, all made by the city, that illustrate the current Covid situation across New York City.

Now, view the graphs from the beginning of the pandemic until today. It is clear that while the number of daily cases across the city have risen dramatically, hospitalizations and deaths have remained comparatively low.

It is important to note that city data also reveals that since vaccinations began, cases, hospitalizations and deaths have been significantly more common among those who are unvaccinated. See graph below.
