A 93-year-old retired nurse was struck and killed by a motorcyclist who fled the scene on Monday afternoon in the Bronx, according to the New York Post. Video obtained by the Post shows Leonara Campbell, a great-grandmother of nine, being hit and dragged on the pavement near White Plains Road and East 225th Street around 2:30 p.m. The rider then drove away.
A second clip filmed moments before the crash shows the motorcyclist accelerating through a changing traffic light roughly 20 feet from where he struck Campbell, the Post reported.
“He was speeding up,” one eyewitness told the Post. “He was trying to make the light. About halfway up the hill you could hear [him] speed up. Then he let off as he was coming across. Then, ‘boom!’ He hit her. Just as he was hitting her I turned away and said, ‘Oh my God!'”
Campbell’s family told the Post she was on her way to pick up medications, candy for neighborhood kids, and food for a hungry boy when she was struck.
Eyewitness Noel Crewe described the scene to the Post. “Her head was bleeding by the jaw, and her ankle was all messed up, her knee all messed up,” Crewe said. “We were all standing there for 45 minutes trying to help her, but by the time the ambulance took her she had already passed.”
The motorcyclist, identified by relatives and authorities as riding a 2012 Yamaha YZFR1, glanced back at Campbell before driving away, according to the Post. “He then stopped. He looked at her for a good minute, and then he left,” Campbell’s grandson Rolando Barrett told the Post. “The guy needs to give himself up, because they still haven’t found him yet. This is a sudden death that never should have happened.”
Police have launched a manhunt for the rider, the Post reported. As of Tuesday, he had not been found.
