#BushwickPride March This Saturday Honors Trans Women of Color

The NYC-wide Pride has passed two weeks ago, but it’s Bushwick who needs to see your supportive faces this coming Saturday! GLOBE, which is Brooklyn’s LGBTQ justice project of Make the Road NY will be hosting  the 9th Annual #BushwickPride march and celebration.

On Saturday at noon, the City Council members, community based organizations as well as community supporters will gather at Make the Road NY Bushwick Office at 301 Grove Street. Marching while chanting and playing music they will head to Maria Hernandez Park, where the performances will begin. Oh, delicious food will be served from 2-5PM.

To honor this year’s theme all the performers will be trans women of color. You can look forward to seeing Bushwick’s favorite drag performer and MC Merrie Cherry, and Jerome André Jones; the poetry of Emanuel Xavier, Phoenix Nastasha Russell, and J Mase III; song and dance by Javon Egyptt, Madison St Claire, and Jonathan Chulo; a performance art piece by Kiyán Williams; and a burlesque number by Foxie Squire.

There will also be a mobile health unit will provide free, rapid HIV testing from 1:30-5:30PM. The attention of this year’s event will focus on their campaign “ Trans* Healthcare Now!” GLOBE has informed us that the campaign seeks to repeal the 1998 Medicaid exclusions that stopped allowing trans* (transgender, gender queer, gender non-conforming, two spirit, third gender, etc) clients from accessing health care deemed necessary by their providers, including gender-affirming surgery, hormone therapy, and preventative check-ups.  The campaign calls for Gov. Cuomo and Health Commissioner Zucker to repeal the discriminatory exclusions.

#BushwickPride, Saturday, July 12, 2014 at noon will march from Make the Road NY Bushwick Office at 301 Grove Street to Maria Hernandez Park. The festivities will end at 5PM. RSVP on Facebook here.
