Friday First: BOYTOY's Garage-Punk Vibe on "Shallow Town"

This week we are head-bobbing to fantastically energetic Brooklyn rockers BOYTOY’s song “Shallow Town” from their self-titled EP out May 13. Friday First is a weekly column devoted to premiering new music from local, national, and international artists.

BOYTOY’s sassy sound is a smart and timely blend of modern garage rock with a 90’s pop-punk vibe. Their sound falls among the rankss of other female-fronted pinky outfits we love like Bleeding Rainbow and Eternal Summers, except these guys incorporate a lot more raw guitar sound. The huge amount of noise that comes through- just two guitars and a drumset- comes from “three dinguses from the same stardust” – aka Saara Untracht-Oakner, Glenn Van Dyke and  Matthew Gregory. The band’s upcoming EP, out on PaperCup Music next Tuesday, promises to be quite a thrill, if it sounds anything like their rip-roaring single “Runner” and the song we share today, “Shallow Town.” The song is loud, upbeat, and just catchy enough to play off its rough-ragged rock edges as pop-punk. Piercing guitar rock never sounded so good as while fueling lead singer Saara Untracht-Oakner’s spitting spiteful lyrics, sung in sugar-coated pop notes, up above. This is some legit rocking girl power at work (and shoutout to the guy in the band, too!) and inspires a whole lot of dance-moshing.

If you’re as whipped as we are, grab tickets for their EP release show at Baby’s All Right on the 23rd, and pre-order the 12″ here.
