The Winners of (and the Runoff from) the 2013 Primary Elections!
If you had to guess which mayoral candidate was going to pull a ridiculous sore loser stunt at the end of the evening, who would you have picked? photo by Lindsey Christ: https://twitter.com/LindseyChrist/status/377652982491648000/photo/1

Good afternoon Bushwick!

While you were all asleep in your beds last night, the city was hard at work tallying the results of yesterday’s primary elections. And while we haven’t entirely avoided a runoff election, we have managed to resolve at least a couple of things! It’s looking like:

Current Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has soundly defeated former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer in the race to become the Democratic candidate for City Comptroller,

Former MTA Chairman Joe Lhota has beaten out his fellow republicans Gristedes Supermarket mogul John Catsimatidis and businessman and Doe Fund founder George McDonald for the Republican Mayoral bid,

In our own neighborhood, Antonio Reynoso and Rafael Espinal have won as the democratic candidates for the 34th and 37th districts respectively (so get ready to see a lot more of them around the neighborhood!);

Incumbent Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes will be succeeded by Ken Thompson;

And finally, former NYPD captain Eric Adams remains the main contender for the Brooklyn Borough President gig.

However, if you remember there being more on the ballot, you remember correctly.

The highly desired Democratic Mayoral Candidate spot is still too close to call. At ‘press time’ Bill de Blasio is in the lead, with 40.2 % of the counted vote, which accounts for 98% of the total votes cast, and Bill Thompson in second place with with 26.1% of the vote. While 40% is magic number for not needing a runoff vote, the votes that remain uncounted are the paper ballots that can take a while to get through–so you’ll just have to remain on the edge of your seats for a little longer on this one.

And Councilwoman Letitia James and State Senator Daniel Squadron seem to be headed for the October 1st runoff elections over the the Public Advocate seat.

Suspense! Intrigue! Voting selfies! Anthony Weiner flipping the bird! Good local primary, everyone.

Now peel that hard-won ‘I Voted!’ sticker off of the cardigan you wore yesterday and remind your pals who didn’t get their voter registration squared away before this round that they should get themselves registered so they can join in the fun on October 1st and November 5th!
