Maybe it’s the promise of a female president or a little princess across the pond, but this weekend’s shows are definitely for the ladies. Finally people get it! We just want to dance, drink whiskey and eat brisket. So ladies and gents, grab your girlfriends and check out our picks below!
#8 Snackfest 2015 Presents Eartheater, Mega Bog, Tredici Bacci, Cloud Becomes Your Hand @ Trans-Pecos, 9-15 Wyckoff Avenue, Ridgewood (SAT 2PM, $7)
Hosted in the backyard of Trans-Pecos: BBQ, snacks and the NYC debut of Tredici Bacci, a 14-piece music ensemble inspired by Italian films from the 60’s and 70’s.
#7 Klassy with a K @ The Shop, 234 Starr Street, Bushwick (FRI 9PM, $8)
The last time I was at The Shop, I watched a video of the previous night’s performer doing spot-on James Brown dance moves backed by a full piece band. Bushwick’s newest triple threat (bar/restaurant/music venue) is definitely on to something with 50’s cover band, Klassy with a K performing against a boozy, nostalgic, BBQ-heavy backdrop.
#6 Soul Night @ Heavy Woods, 50 Wyckoff Avenue, Bushwick (THU 10PM, $FREE)
It’s common knowledge that whatever Heavy Woods says do, everyone just nods their head in agreement and does it. DJ Guyanna Ross (best DJ name ever?) will be spinning rare funk, soul and Motown to celebrate warm weather, patio dining and Heavy Woods’ new bathroom! If you need a reason to dress up, formal attire is encouraged.
#5 Boss Bitches Night w/ Desert Sharks, THICK, Ritual Humor and Les Bicyclettes Blanches @ Kings County Saloon, 1 Knickerbocker Avenue, East Williamsburg (FRI 8PM, $FREE)
Besides having the best band name ever, on their latest track Air, les bicyclettes blanches’ lead vocalist Magnolia Santibanez sometimes serenades in French against mellow acoustics.
#4 Talibam!, Banned Books, Palm, Gold Dime, Bueno @ Shea Stadium, 20 Meadow Street, East Williamsburg (SAT 8:30PM, $8)
Music collective Talibam! sounds different with every listen and it isn’t unusual to hear cows and orchestral chaos in their recordings. Catch them performing their latest album Puff Up The Volume (Critical Heights), which they describe as “uninhibited meme team pop”.
#3 Yonatan Gat Residency @ Aviv, 496 Morgan Avenue, Greenpoint (FRI 8PM, $10)
Don’t miss the final day of psychedelic, punk guitarist and improviser, Yonatan Gat‘s residency at AVIV. Friday’s lineup also includes Your 33 Black Angels (record release concert), Andy Boay (of TONSTARTSSBANDHT), Jerry Paper and DJ Joel Stones of Tropicalia In Furs who will spin between sets.
#2 A Place to Bury Strangers, Sleepies, Pill, Bambara @Brooklyn Night Bizarre, 165 Banker Street, Williamsburg (SAT 7PM, $FREE)
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for DIY music venues and sadly, this Saturday is Brooklyn Night Bizarre’s last show in Williamsburg: the venue will be relaunched in the Rockaways. So go, pour one out, and commiserate amongst fellow indie music, small batch loving comrades.
#1 A.R.T.S.Y. Magazine Presents: LA or Bust! @ Mao Live House, 864 Myrtle Avenue, Bushwick (SAT 8PM, $10)
Help Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter, Tangina Stone perform her first show in LA by attending Saturday’s fundraising concert. Tangina’s rise has been meteoric, and rightfully so as her vocals are reminiscent of Amy Winehouse’s Frank, but sweeter. All proceeds from the concert help Tangina pay for her and her band’s travel expenses. Now go support – because everyone should experience LA’s tacos!
