Back To Cool: Top Music Shows This Weekend!

Back-to-School? Pshhh. Here at Bushwick Daily, it’s back to cool (the weather, and our attitude). Mugs of steaming hot tea? Yes, please. Sweaters? Love them. Changing leaves? We want to shower in ’em. But with fall doesn’t just come cooler temperatures. There’s also a whole new season of music worth getting excited about, which is pretty much what we’re doing at exactly this moment. Wanna know the very best part? You’re not prepping to hit those dreaded high school hallways. Instead, you can plan for an epic September weekend of top shows that include Radical Dads, Porches, Bushwig, and of course, Holy Smokes!, our very own festival with a lineup even dreamier than Zack Morris himself. Read on for all the details, and let’s get back to being the awesome people that we are, Bushwick!

8. Live World Music Party @ Bushwick Kitchen (SUN 6-10PM, $free)

If you haven’t tried Bushwick Kitchen’s scrumptious African delights, Sunday night may be the perfect time to haul your butt over and enjoy dinner, drinks, and incredible live world music in their cozy backyard. They do this music party twice monthly but, hey, this weather isn’t gonna last forever, so take advantage while you can!

7. The Babies & Spires @ Mercury Lounge (SAT 10:30PM, FREE!)

We’ve featured Spires quite a lot ‘round these parts, and not just because they’re local to our favorite neighborhood; this Bushwick band’s spacious, psychedelic sounds are second to none. Now is your chance to catch them for free, and all it takes is a subway swipe! Spires play Mercury Lounge with fellow Brooklynites The Babies on Friday night.

 6. Porches Record Release Show @ Shea Stadium (FRI 8PM, $8)

Porches make the sort of sad, melancholy tunes that are perfect for transitioning from summer to fall. At Shea Stadium, these dudes are celebrating the recent release of their record, Slow Dance in the Cosmos, with a whole slew of excellent openers: Summer People, No One & The Somebodies, and Frankie Cosmos.

If that’s the case, then you’ll totally want in on Bushwig, the second annual festival of drag in Bushwick! All day long, get your fix of fab with plenty of performers, cocktails, makeovers, goodies, and so much more.

2. Country Brunchin’ @ Nitehawk Cinema (SAT & SUN 11:30AM)

At this point, we’ve all established that brunch is pretty much the best thing ever. But just when you thought your weekends couldn’t get any brunchier, Nitehawk is taking our favorite activity to a whole new level of awesome. On the first Saturday and Sunday of each month, they’ll be serving up live movie accompaniment (in this case, country music) and western movies alongside our favorite southern dishes. On this weekend’s installment of Country Brunchin’ enjoy the jazzy southern jams of Honeyfingers before digging into country fried comedy classic City Slickers.

1. Holy Smokes! Music & Arts Festival @ Silent Barn (SUN)

Holy Smokes is here! It’s finally here! And okay, maybe we’re biased, but we think it’s the very best music event of the weekend. We can barely contain our excitement, and for good reason; we curated this one-day festival experience along with our pals The Bottom Dollars, and we just know you’re going to love it. Bands, booze, burritos, outdoor excellence – what more could you want, Bushwick? We can’t wait to see you there!
