The Fort, located on 28 Locust St, is one of the coolest recording studios we’ve stumbled upon in Bushwick. Last year we featured them in our Bushwick Guide as a “studio with style.” This year, we were sad to hear from owner Jim Bentley that they were, like many businesses, having trouble making ends meet. They’re coming up on their 10th anniversary, and are throwing a “black tie” rock’n’roll fundraiser happening at multiple spaces indoors and outdoors this Saturday. (That’s right, on 4/20!). Free food, drinks, and MUSIC. Read on.
Expect great things, including performances by Bushwick bands Electric People, Our Mountain, The Nuclears, Youth Quake, Vulture Shit and Atomic Hips. Tickets are $20 advance and include free food and drinks all day– courtesy of their wonderful sponsors, which include The Bagel Store, Pinebox, and Goodbye Blue Monday. And wait, does it say go-go girls on the flyer? AWESOME. We can’t wait to see you there! Below is the full press release, background on clients of The Fort, and more images of the studio! Also check the event out on facebook.

The Fort Brooklyn 10th Anniversary “Black-Tie” Benefit Rock Show
April 10, 2013 – The Fort Brooklyn, a music recording studio, located atop a hill in Bushwick Brooklyn in the center of a vibrant music culture is turning 10. On April 20th, 2013, The Fort Brooklyn will be hosting a 10th Anniversary “Black-Tie” fundraiser.
Over the past 10 years The Fort Brooklyn has hosted and launched the careers of many young artists and received numerous accolades from the press and music fans along the way. It was given the title “Best Recording Studio to Create Your Next Masterpiece” in the Village Voice’s ‘Best Of’ issue, 2006.
In 2003, The Fort Brooklyn was designed and built by James Bentley. The protege of Malcolm Chisholm (Chess records – Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Howlin‘ Wolf, etc), the first decade of his career as a recording/mix engineer, based in Chicago, includes countless hours of freelance work at studios both big and small. To this day, The Fort Brooklyn has recorded 50+ LP’s, 40+ EP’s, countless singles and demos, and also a few songs for film and television. Label clients include: Universal/Motown, EMI, Capitol, Ecstatic Peace!, Matador, Darla, Le Grand Magistery, Chainsaw, Heartcore, Red Panda, Secretly Canadian, Kiam, and Cordless/Warner.
The Fort Brooklyn was built to keep the cost to the client low thus, allowing the time needed to capture timless performances. It is large enough to achieve the “giant room” sound if/when needed. The size also allows for a bands performance to be captured live without the need for isolation rooms. Again, allowing for timeless performances. All of the gear here has been hand picked from all eras of music from lo-fi and vintage to hi-fi and “state of the art”.
On April 20th, 2013, The Fort Brooklyn will be hosting a 10th Anniversary “Black-Tie” fundraiser. There will be live performances by: Electric People, Our Mountain, The Nuclears, Youth Quake, Vulture Shit and Atomic Hips. This outdoor/indoor event begins at 4pm and ends at 11pm. Food and drinks will be served for free thoughout the day and there will be rotating DJ’s in the side lot, the studio itself, and another 2000 square foot space on the 4th floor.
The following businesses have been kind enough to lend their support to help make this a day to remember: Pine Box Rock Shop, Post Bikes, Don Pedro, The Bagel Store, Silkys Brooklyn, Little Skips, Stay Fresh Grill, Goodbye Blue Monday, and Ancor Aquarium Service.
