Bushwick native La Daniella returns to The Bushwick Starr with puppet musical about gentrification and mermaids

The production tells the story of a community of mermaids dealing with gentrification and explores themes of belonging and resistance against capitalist forces, according to The Bushwick Starr’s announcement. La Daniella, who appeared in Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” created the work as a reflection of the changing landscape of New York City.

Performances will run through Feb. 23, with a possible extension through Feb. 28. Shows are recommended for audiences ages 12 and older.

The production team includes rising director Sammy Zeisel, whose previous work includes productions at Juilliard, Lincoln Center, Peabody Essex Museum, Hubbard Hall and Bethany Arts Center. Ben Langhorst composed the music for the show.

The Bushwick Starr is offering special community nights and accessible performances as part of its commitment to serving diverse audiences.
