Tonight, you can have your dinner and do good at the same time. The Stoop Bar & Grill will host a fundraiser from 4 to 11 p.m. to benefit the Babies Heart Fund where 50 percent of all dinner proceeds will go to the organization that raises funds for congenital heart disease research.
The cause is close to the heart of owner, Marvin Carbajal, a longtime Bushwick resident whose son, Matthew, was born with Tetralogy of Fallot and had to undergo open heart surgery at three months old. The disease’s symptoms include a phenomenon called a “tet spell” in which babies suffer from shortness of breath, agitation, and loss of consciousness.
His son is four years old now, but 1 in 2,000 newborns are still affected by the disease. It is one of the most common complex congenital heart defect, and as with all matters of medicine, more research is necessary for doctors to provide better treatment.
The Stoop’s menu includes a wide array of dishes and cocktails that relate in some way to Carbajal’s upbringing on the stoops of Bushwick, and if you haven’t been down there yet, today is a good opportunity to gorge yourself on tostaditas, guacamole, and cocktails.
