Bushwick & Ridgewood Succumb to a Holiday Laser Light Shower Craze

It’s impossible not to notice them while walking through the frigidly cold nighttime Bushwick or Ridgewood. Holiday laser lights of green and red projected from a small box onto a façade transform a totally average house into some serious seasonal magic.

Holiday laser lights, also known as Star Laser Shower Lights, are probably the first and the only trend that suburbs went crazy over long before Bushwick. Last year, I’ve noticed them used abundantly while spending the holidays with my in-laws in New Jersey. This year, the laser lights have hit Bushwick hard.

It’s genius really. You don’t need to buy yards and yards of Christmas string lights, and you don’t need to risk your life while stapling them onto the roof in freezing temperatures a la Clark Griswold. You simply buy a single box that goes for about $39, install it, and your house is in some serious holiday business.

The New York Times has recently compared the laser shower lights to 1997 craze over Teletubbies, or the mid-1980s Cabbage Patch Kids frenzy.

This simplification of holiday decoration is very successful in our neighborhood where many renters live, and who, let’s be honest here, often don’t have hundreds of dollars to spend on Xmas lights, or don’t feel a similarly strong sense of pride over their building such as homeowners.

A store assistant at Family Dollar at 1815 Gates Ave. in Ridgewood, which sells the lights for $30, told us the holiday laser lights have been selling “like crazy.”

Similarly, Amazon shoppers have expressed their unadulterated love for the light shower in reviews: “Love love love this beautiful, inexpensive product that my entire family enjoys! Even the neighbors want to know where to buy them. It took my husband about 5 minutes to install (easy cheesy)!” Another simply said: “Saved the marriage!”

Pro tip: The lights look great also when installed indoors, particularly in a loft setting.
