Get ready to eat well & do some good, Bushwick!
On Thursday, November 10, Bushwick community hub Mayday Space will host the fourth annual “Who Feeds the City?” party, a fundraiser for the New York State farmworker advocacy organization Rural and Migrant Ministry.
The party is an opportunity to partake of some delicious food and drinks, including produce from Katchkie Farm in Kinderhook, New York, Murray’s Cheese and West Village Italian restaurant Rafele.
Guests will enjoy a DJ set and drag performance (by artists DJ Beto and Bushwig’s Lady Quesadilla, respectively) and can bid in a silent auction featuring prizes donated by DIA: Beacon, Storm King Art Center, New York Botanic Garden, City Winery, and Foods of NYC Tours; and get to know the workers whose labor sustains our town.
“New York City’s food system is a vast network of restaurants, retailers, schools and hospitals, food carts and farmers’ markets. Helping supply food to the city’s millions of consumers each day are tens of thousands of farmworkers across the state,” reads a statement from Rural and Migrant Ministry.
“Yet most of these workers lack the basic rights that other workers in this country have enjoyed for generations – including a day of rest, overtime pay, and the right to collectively bargain.”
In addition to the performances, several farmworkers will be on hand to speak about their experiences working in the state’s fields and farms.
Tickets cost $50 per person and $20 for students and are free of charge for all farmworkers, and they are available here. Proceeds will benefit Rural & Migrant Ministry’s Justice for Farmworkers programming.
