Lots of great shows are happening this week! Here are a few worth checking out:
Wednesday, Sept. 18
David Dondero, Holy Tunics, Clone at El Cortez, 7 p.m.
Singer-songwriter David Dondero is passing through The Safari Room at El Cortez for a special intimate gig of passionate indie-folk. Local power-pop outfit Holy Tunics are also slated to perform a handful of numbers from their latest blissful sounding LP, Hit Parade Lemonade Supersonic Spree, which you should check out before summer officially ends. Opening the show is Clone, a new project featuring members of DIIV, Dead Leaf Echo, and Bodega.
Thursday, Sept. 19
Winnebago Vacation, Nervous Dater, Verdigrls at Trans-Pecos, 8 p.m.
Winnebago Vacationer , the Queens project of Top Nachos’ Eli Frank, just dropped their second album Camp Somewhere late last month, and their official release show is happening this Thursday at Trans-Pecos. Frank showcases his diversity as a songwriter on Camp Somewhere. The songs are melancholic and self-described as a type of dark “goth-folk,” a stark contrast to the raucous garage sound of Top Nachos. Local indie-punks Nervous Dater and Verdigrls, who just released their excellent EP Small Moves earlier this summer, are also on the bill.
Friday, Sept. 20
Parsnip, Air Waves, Waist, People’s Court at The Footlight, 8 p.m.
Melbourne, Australia’s Parsnip are making their New York City debut on Friday night at The Footlight. The jangly four-piece just released their debut full-length When The Tree Bears Fruit on Trouble In Mind Records, and their warm, vintage sounds are fondly reminiscent of New Zealand’s The Clean. This lineup also features the serene indie-folk of Air Waves, and People’s Court, a relatively new band fronted by Jess McFarland, and Waist.
Saturday, Sept. 21
Monograms, Big Bliss, Russian Baths, Jelly Kelly at The Broadway
The debut full-length from Brooklyn darkwave act Monograms, Living Wire, is set for release this Friday, and the band will be marking the occasion with a special release show on Saturday at The Broadway. The record’s first three singles, “Don’t Fight For It,” “Sounds Like Mean Spirit,” and “Pirate Government, Inc.” are drenched in synths with some dark, haunting rhythms, so expect some more heavily ’80s influenced goth new wave sounding tunes on the balance of the record. The rest of this release show lineup is stacked, as post-punk favorites Big Bliss, noise-rockers Russian Baths, and Jelly Kelly round out the bill.
