If you’re looking for a heartwarming Monday evening activity, look no further than The Living Gallery. The all-purpose Bushwick art space will host a show on May 1 comprised entirely of the work of autistic kindergarten students.
Curator and teacher, Meghan Proehl, tells Bushwick Daily that students started out by choosing art as their enrichment activity, and she, along with a co-teacher created an “art enrichment cluster called Studio 53.”
She adds: “We began by exposing our students to different art supplies and tools and started with foundational art concepts. We practiced making different types of lines, learned about color theory and how we create all colors from primary colors. Once they had a strong foundation, we moved into studying four artists and their styles: Van Gogh, Picasso, Seurat, and Pollock.”
The one-night only event will be a great chance to see the work of budding creative types and to learn “more about autism, [the] students, and their abilities!” Each student’s final piece will be a cityscape inspired by their artist of choice.
Refreshments will be provided at the show, which takes place from 5 – 8 p.m. on Monday, May 1.
