Bushwick, we have a bike lane!
After many months of planning and deliberation, the first of the two bike lanes approved for implementation by Bushwick’s Community Board has finally appeared on Irving Avenue, just in time for warm weather cycling!
The lane, which currently runs from Flushing Ave to Putnam Street, will make the street, which studies found to be heavily utilized by cyclists prior to the addition of the lane, safer for everyone using it (including drivers and pedestrians).
The necessity for the new lane on Irving, and also for another lane on Bushwick’s Knickerbocker Ave commercial corridor, was hotly debated by the CB4 and the DOT; by adding a one-way bike lane on each of the two streets, the DOT hoped to create a safer cycling route for the many locals who ride through the neighborhood regularly.
Give it a spin, Bushwick cyclists!
