The whirlwind of bar and restaurant news in Bushwick continues with the announcement that Mad Tropical, originally a popup attached to Greenpoint bar Tender Trap, is making a permanent home in Bushwick in Tandem’s vacated space on Troutman Avenue.
Bedford and Bowery reports that Mad Tropical had a soft opening party this past weekend complete with music and a preview of the food offerings courtesy of the team behind Williamsburg Mexican restaurant Donna. The offshoot’s name, Donna Chiquita, suggests the menu will be a smaller version of the tacos and shared plates offered at the original.
Menu items at the weekend parties included cauliflower tacos and a shareable Mexican pizza. We reached out to the owners for more info about the food and any other details about the types of parties they’ll be hosting, and we’ll update when we hear back.
The combination of islandy vibes with Mexican inspired fare is sure to mimic Tandem, at least a little bit, which is something to celebrate given how much we miss the spot that gave us raucous parties and some of the most delicious brunch this side of Flushing Avenue.
Tomorrow, you’ll be able to see for yourself if this bar lives up to the high expectations we’ve got for the space.
