Smack Mellon, the DUMBO nonprofit arts organization, has announced the six artists selected for its 2026-27 Artist Studio cohort, according to a July 1 email from the organization.
The incoming residents are Amy Bravo, Aparna Sarkar, Asia Stewart, Enrique Garcia, Judy Chung, and Soeun Bae. All six are NYC-based emerging artists.
Per the organization, the group will move into their studios at 92 Plymouth Street in DUMBO this September. The residency runs for eleven months and includes a private studio, a stipend, and access to equipment, along with financial, technical, and administrative support from Smack Mellon. The program helps residents create work, connect with arts professionals, and meet other artists.
The announcement lands during Smack Mellon’s 30th anniversary year. The organization’s stated mission is to nurture and support emerging, under-recognized mid-career, and women artists by providing exhibition opportunities, studio workspace, and access to equipment and technical assistance. A 30th-anniversary exhibition is planned for the fall, with an opening reception set for Saturday, September 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Plymouth Street space, according to the organization.
Smack Mellon is also accepting applications from NYC-area curators for its annual Emerging Artists Summer Group Exhibition, which is slated to open during the summer of 2027 across the organization’s two gallery spaces. The application deadline is August 15, 2026 at midnight EST. Smack Mellon says it is interested in proposals that address political, social, or environmental issues.
The organization receives support from, among others, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and Council Member Lincoln Restler, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the State Legislature, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Ruth Foundation for the Arts, and the Jerome Foundation. Studio space is provided by the Walentas Family and Two Trees Management.
