Morrissey is coming to Bushwick—or at least, his t-shirts are.
The brooding former front man of The Smiths announced via Facebook post Tuesday that his official merch store will pop up at Bushwick dog rescue and daycare facility Sugar Mutts next weekend on Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25.
The pop up begins on the date of Morrissey’s sold out show at Brooklyn’s Kings Theater. Tickets for the show in the venue, which seats 3,000, started at $55 dollars for seats in the nosebleeds, according to Ticketmaster.
On Wednesday morning, hundreds of fans had posted on Facebook sharing plans to attend the pop up, which organizers say will offer, among other things, “100 limited edition bundles consisting of a numbered poster, pillowcase and pen. Morrissey will sign one of these posters and everyone purchasing a bundle will be entered into a draw to win the signed poster.”
A fee and percentage of the profits from the pop up will the 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which rescues dogs of all breeds with special attention to the plight of “the dogs that are most discriminated against,” from high kill shelters around the country.
Moz is a controversial figure in some circles, and has shared plenty of horrendous opinions over his long career, but if one must sell lots of overpriced items with one’s face on it, it’s nice to be able to do it for a good cause—and who knows, maybe one or two mopey fans will come home from the event with dog adoption plans, in addition to their official Morrissey pillowcase.
The pop up’s hours of operation will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Sugar Mutts is located at 130 Palmetto Street between Evergreen Avenue and Central Avenue near the Halsey Street stop on the J train.
