What do big brass bands and video game theme songs have in common? If you were to say nothing, you would likely be right. But meet Consoul VGM (video game music). The group of brass heavy-hitters returns to East Williamsburg’s Sunnyvale on Tuesday, August 23 to pull us gamers out of our seats and onto the dance floor.
Danny Flam, who has played for the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded brass for Jay Z, Kanye West and others, says “video game music is the soundtrack that accompanies video games, and for many people, the sound that accompanied our childhoods.”
And what better way to celebrate this nostalgia than with a Pokemon Go themed party with other nerds who would like nothing more than to get down to brass arrangements of the famous Pokemon theme in addition to songs from Super Mario, Zelda, Street Fighter, Sonic, Tetris, and the Civilization series.
Grammy award nominees and winners make up a huge portion of the 14 member Consoul VGM including Mitch Freedman and Felipe Fournier.
Water and Electric type Pokemon are sure to be abundant in the waters of nearby Newtown Creek and the East Williamsburg Industrial Park, respectively. And most importantly, perhaps, Sunnyvale itself is a gym.
Doors open at 8pm and tickets are available here for eight dollars (10 at the door).
