Never Fear! Your Weekend Art Guide Is Here!

Well, kids, it is officially May which, for me, stands for margaritas, wearing white and, of course, Bushwick Open Studios! While this event is still a few weeks away, the galleries are already getting ready for it and the neighborhood is literally buzzing with activity. There is a slew of galleries at the 56 Bogart building celebrating openings this weekend, while other galleries are giving viewers once last chance to see their show before closing up shop. This week we can also celebrate a couple of stellar events in Williamsburg and Bed Stuy that are surely worth the trek. With so much happening, it’s a good thing you have us to curate your weekend for you! Here’s how to get the most bang for your buck for your art weekend!

 Friday

Diversify your Friday by hitting up the 56 Bogart building, where galleries Fuchs Projects, C.C.C.P., and Robert Henry Contemporary all have tremendously exciting openings. We are anxiously anticipating the Girls Exhibition at the C.C.C.P.; a group show curated by Kelsey Shwetz, which still very much remains a mystery, but is sure to be a provocative showcase of female artists that we hope continues to push the boundaries of women’s art in new and thought-provoking ways. Robert Henry Contemporary always delivers, and this week’s opening of Phillip Buntin’s On Not Knowing leaves us wanting to know more! The abstracted, limited palette acrylics on canvas, enamel and plexiglass paintings possess a street art rawness that just beg to be given room to be seen and conjure up images. Buntin explores the concept of incompleteness and the boundaries between science, philosophy, and art. Fuchs Projects is celebrating the opening of the long-anticipated Photographs by Brittany Markert exhibition. Contemplating concepts of identity, loss and memory, Markert succeeds in setting up vignettes in order to truly capture a genuine moment, only to insert herself spontaneously into the shot.

From the galleries on Bogart, continue your night off in the direction of Bed Stuy (by way of Tutu’s or Wreck Room if you’re in need of some refreshments between events!) to find the sophomore debut for the new gallery, The Bishop. Their new exhibition, Fleet, will showcase several different artists who have created a family or collection of works that stand together as one. Each family of work will be congregated in the gallery and work together to defend or support one another.

Saturday

Never Fear! Your Weekend Art Guide Is Here!
Kenichi Nakajima, part of Significant Matter (courtesy of Projekt722)

Things are heating up in Williamsburg! Two events that we are really excited for will make you glad you ventured to Bushwick’s sister neighborhood: openings at PIPS and Projekt722. Both shows play with the notion of space and matter, and how we interact with systems around us. Form Follows at PIPS, a solo exhibition by artist Benjamin Jay Shand, showcases the artists complex photographs that connect the languages of art with that of architecture and industrialization. Focusing on the urbanization of our immediate environment, Shand strives to capture the beautiful banality and abstraction in the everyday. Down the street on Metropolitan, Projekt722 presents a group show with works by four artists (Nobutaka Aozaki, Miwa Koizumi, Kenichi Nakajima, and Andrew Zarou), whose art similarly plays on the industrialized nature of our city environment. Whether contrasting artistic to non-artistic labor, tracking the daily interactions of strangers, or presenting the conflict between internal and external encounters, all of these artists’ work speaks volumes to the contemporary climate for city dwellers and the tribulations of our day-to-day lives.
