The six-alarm fire on Dekalb Ave on the evening of March 29 tore through 30 households, displacing at least 66 adults and 20 children. Some have moved into temporary housing, some of them still need a place to go in the interim.
Earlier we wrote about a fundraiser launched by local coffee shop, Express Yourself Barista Bar, to help the Gonzalez family. We also promised to update you on further efforts to help the victims, your neighbors and friends, rebuild their lives. These are those efforts and fundraisers, in no particular order.
April 9 – Benefit at the Silent Barn
An all ages concert this Saturday at the Silent Barn. Doors open at 8pm. Click the headline for list of acts and more information. $8 suggested donation. Co-presented by Disclaimer Gallery and Mi Casa No Es Su Casa: Illumination Against Gentrification. 603 Bushwick Ave at Melrose.
April 9 – Central Station
Concert fundraiser for the Gonzalez family at Central Station from 10pm – 4am. Suggested donation of $15. 84 Central Ave at Jefferson St. The Gonzalez’s also have a GoFundMe page.
April 17 – The Legacy Center
Sunday April 17. 1 – 5:30pm. Family gathering hosted by DJ Carlito. Bring monetary donations and new or gently used clothing. 16-33 Centre St between Wyckoff and Cypress.
Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council: Legal Empowerment & Assistance Program
RBSCC is working in junction with Red Cross. They’re providing legal services (preserving the right to return and keep active tenancy) to displaced families. They’re helping with temporary housing, interim rent, new clothes, new furniture, metro-cards and other cash needs.
RBSCC is also the designated community donation site for non-food and non-monetary items. They’re accepting new or gently used clean clothing and toiletries of all sizes and genders. Bring items to 217 Wyckoff Ave at Greene St.

The 83rd precinct is accepting gift cards and new or gently used clothing. Bring items to 179 Wilson Ave at Dekalb.
Make the Road set up this donation in tandem with the assemblyman and city council. Be sure to add “Fire Victims” in the dedication box at the bottom.
The local karate center has a GoFundMe page to help rebuild their school.
They are currently staying in a hotel provided by the Red Cross.
Rivera’s mother lived at her Dekalb home for over 23 years. She’s lost all her possessions.
Single mother Diahann Perez and her 10-year-old son Benjamin have also lost all their possessions, in addition to other recent personal tragedies.
They had been staying in a hotel provided by the Red Cross, but have only been provided housing for 3 nights.
Hermando and his elderly parents need assistance.
